Raft of the Medusa

“This is the best theatre in education I’ve seen in my seventeen years of teaching” - Carol Kelly, Head of Expressive Arts, Winterhill School, in discussion about a previous version of this project (see Company of Teachers Project).

The story of a painting. The painting of a story.(Download the Brochure)

Pulling Rope After looking at a reproduction of Gericault’s painting, The Raft of The Medusa, the pupils are invited in to Gericault’s studio by his assistant who has been given the task to find some models. When his master arrives he uses the models to create the scene which he thinks will become his painting. The scene depicts the moment that the survivors of a shipwreck are abandoned on a raft in the middle of the sea with water up to their waists. For Gericault the picture does not work and so begins his journey to find the moment which captures the truth of this real life story of survival against all the odds.
